A Muse in Reverential Red and Black
This is an exuberant and lyrical meditation on life-- notably the poet's-- influenced by his muse, the Chicago Bulls. They have some kind of very important place -- kind of spiritual-- in his journey to unravel the meaning of the turbulence in his life and the joy and beauty mitigating it. I loved the poems and his voice.
You need not like basketball to appreciate the life lessons here
This collection of poems is a rare gift. It contains honest stories, masquerading as poems, using basketball as metaphor. You need not like basketball to appreciate the life lessons here; lessons of finding oneself, growing up, hard work, and magical stories about the people in our world who end up shaping us in humanly lovely ways. These poems have so many well-thought out layers, I'll be looking for them again in my second and third reads. All this, and these poems are also incredibly accessible - but don't let that fool you. Myers' writing is smart, funny and wise. I would have started and finished this book in one night, because it drew me in like that, but I didn't want it to end, so I saved it until the next morning, because I couldn't stay away. It's encouraging to me that Austin, TX high-school students have a teacher like Daniel Myers. They're a lucky bunch. Get this book, read it, savor it, and share it. You won't be disappointed.

So interesting. It takes a subject I would not normally be into and makes it into a story.
