CHI 95 CLE 106
As a boy
I collected cards
And action figures.
I would look at them
And play with them
And cherish them.
And if something better came along--
I would trade them.
Head forward.
Eyes to the future.
We burn through our childhoods
Trading this moment
For the next.
Until suddenly
We are grown.
And then we focus our collections.
We stop gathering up
Tradable assets
To make space
For the pieces that really matter.
And to make space
For each other.
As a man,
I am still a collector,
But not like before.
What used to be posters on my wall
Are now pages in a book
On a shelf.
A book about me.
Folded and filed away.
What used to fill my trophy case
Now clutters up my storage space.
Boxed, stacked, and labeled.
Waiting--
Like a legacy.
I collected cards
And action figures.
I would look at them
And play with them
And cherish them.
And if something better came along--
I would trade them.
