Haiku

I used to think that
Obsolete was only a
Technology word.

Once upon a time--

Before information evaporated,
Saturating the world
Entire--

Movies
Were stored on tape.

And I worked at the local
Artsy-fartsy
Independent video store.

A kind of
Nerdy
Kind of
Cool.

Film students.
Actors.
Homosexuals.

Black turtlenecks and
Trenchcoats and

Horn-rimmed glasses.

We had all the hippest
Hardest to find
Underground shit.

But we also had
New releases.

And I was just a kid,
So I barely noticed it then
Or understood that it mattered.

But over the few years
I worked there--

The darkening dusk
Of the golden age of video--

Of analogue anything--

The new release wall grew
And grew
And grew.

New
New
NEW.

Customers herded
And penned in.

Refugees
Crowded around
A relief truck.

Professional athletes
At the fountain of youth.
