Some lessons
Are hard to learn.

Yesterday,
One of my students told me
About her lifelong
Battle with shyness.

Until eighth grade
She never raised her hand in class--
Not once.

Really smart kid.

But too afraid to speak--
To be seen.

What happened?
I asked,

Because now
She is extremely confident
And a willing participant in class debate.

I pissed my pants.

I was afraid to ask to go to the bathroom
And I pissed my pants.

And I was like:
Fuck this.
