Sometimes a race car
Runs out of gas
During a race.

Sputtering and clunking ahead
Herky-jerky
Like a man,
out-of-breath,
Running for the train.

Fizzling out
And frustrating
Like a fourth-of-July firework
Fuse.

Pitter-pattering away
Like oars swallowed-up
On a windless day,
Or a basketball
Bouncing to a stop
On the edge of the rim.
